Super Rare Flavio Poli Lion Circa 1930
This is a very rare and very significant piece of vintage Murano glass, perhaps the only one in existence in these colors and perhaps one of only a handful in this technique. A similar lion is published in the Murano Bestiary book by Marina Barovier as produced by Flavio Poli, but the one pictured does not have the contrasting glass colors that make this one more appealing in my opinion. That lion was auctioned by Sothebys in the early 1990's and attributed to Barovier before Marina published her book referencing it. This amazing piece of vintage Murano glass was created by one of the masters as this whole intricate work was created all at once with multiple hot applications. There are so few of these in existence because the technique resulted in too few that actually survived the creation process. The piece had to be kept hot the whole time while all these applications were executed. Too cold, and the glass cracks. This one and the one pictured in Marina Barovier's book both have internal heat fractures from the application of so much glass in one sitting. This piece measures 11 inches long and 5 inches high. It is missing the tip of its tail and few tips of mane. Near the end of the tail is a crack to the tail, and what appears to be an in-factory application of additional glass above the feet to either further support the back end or repair a problem. Otherwise in great condition and surprisingly the majority of the piece is still intact.
